Mastering ArcGIS Pro introduces the basic ideas behind GIS, teaching the concepts and skills needed to enter this rapidly evolving industry or use GIS in your current discipline. Based on the widely used ArcGIS software developed by Esri, Inc., this text integrates learning fundamental concepts with practicing software skills and is suitable for classroom use or for professionals studying independently.

CANADIAN COMPANION CONNECT. Now included in Connect are five original assignments covering topics such as Working with Overlays: Evaluating the Potential Impact of Coastal Flooding on the City of Vancouver. These assignments provide students with ArcGIS Pro exercises using Canadian data sets. Each assignment is supported by instructors solutions, short assessment questions in multiple choice or short answer format and all are assignable through Connect. A sample syllabus is also available in Connect and shows how faculty can leverage the assignments with the text content for a one-semester course.

REFOCUSED ON THE BASICS OF GIS. Mastering ArcGIS Pro is now presented in 12 concise chapters, leaving time for instructors to better incorporate exams and projects within the semester. Some of the more advanced and less frequently used skills, such as planar topology and standards-based metadata, have been left for students to explore on their own.

UPDATED SOFTWARE REFERENCES. The ArcGIS Pro software capabilities and interface are continuing to evolve. Although the basic capabilities of ArcGIS Pro have not much changed since the first edition, the interface has many small changes. This second edition has been updated to reflect many small changes to the interface between versions 2.2 and 2.8.

UPDATED CHAPTER 6 ON RASTER DATA MANAGEMENT. Raster data management has been discussed in a new chapter to acquaint students with compiling and processing raster data sets, supplementing a similar chapter on vector data management.

COLLECTING DATA USING MOBILE DEVICES. ArcGIS Pro was designed to foster the sharing of GIS data and workflows, and these enhanced capabilities are explored in another new chapter, including how to prepare a database for collecting data using mobile devices.

REORGANIZED CHAPTERS AND TOPICS. The chapters and topics have been reorganized to eliminate some repetition and to present the information more logically. The text still roughly follows the project model with data management presented first and analysis second.

UPDATED TUTORIALS, QUESTIONS, & EXERCISES. In-chapter tutorials, questions, and exercises have been re-written to include more open-ended creative questions, rather than cut-and-dried questions and answers.

BALANCE IN CONCEPTS & SKILLS. Instructors have a hard time teaching students why software steps are important in GIS. This resource helps students understand the geographic and database concepts that are integral to spatial data management and analysis with Concept sections at the beginning of every chapter to explain what students are learning and why its important.

ACTIVE LEARNING APPROACH. Instructors need help with getting students to learn ArcGIS by doing ArcGIS. Integral to this resource are Tutorial sections that integrate theory with practical experience that provide students with a hands-on, active learning approach. Each step is demonstrated through a video clip and is accompanied with data sets.

CRITICAL THINKING FOCUS. Often instructors find it hard to teach students how to think critically about ArcGIS software, concepts, theory, and practice. With Exercise sections in every chapter, this resource presents a series of problems with accompanying data sets so students can build the skills they need to identify an appropriate solution without step-by-step guided help.
